Family Activities: Natural Boat | Living

rock the boat

This simple project using natural materials can engage you and your little one on several adventures in the wilderness. First, a foraging trip to your local park or in the back garden to find some dead leaves, these will become the sail. You will then need to find a boat- a used half walnut shell or any shell or seed case would work well.

The crafty part is very easy. A hot glue gun is ideal to use, dab a small amount of glue on one end of the shell then press the stork of the leaf into the glue. The melted glue dries very fast, so you just need to hold it on place for the minute or so, then you are ready for the next adventure.

Explore the local rock pools, stream or bath to test the boat. You may need to experiment with blowing wind into the sail or creating a current in the water, but this is all part of the fun.

Don't forget to wear your Toms or gumboots, and if it is a little chilly a woolly layer. Have Fun! xx
